Chimney and Fireplace · York County
Chimneys here take about 120 nights a year below freezing, most followed by a daytime thaw, and water that gets into brick and mortar freezes and expands over and over. In prewar towns like York city, Red Lion, Wrightsville and Delta, many chimneys are older than the furnace they vent, and switching fuels or appliances can leave a flue that needs a liner.
Ask for a written inspection with photos of the flue, not just a sweep, and get a second opinion on any large repair bid that comes out of a first visit. In York city's historic district, chimney work goes to the Historical Architecture Review Board before it starts.
A free chimney inspection that finds a full rebuild deserves a second look. Chimneys are old here, but not every old chimney is falling down.
