Masonry and Stone · York County
Masonry here takes about 120 freezing nights a year, most followed by a thaw, so water that gets into joints freezes and pushes them apart winter after winter. Prewar brick in York city, Red Lion and Hanover, whose historic district is mostly brick and frame from 1870 to 1946, was usually laid with softer lime mortar than today's mixes. Most of Delta's houses still have slate roofs.
Ask what mortar the mason plans to use for repointing old brick, since a hard modern mix can crack the brick around it. In York city's historic district, repointing and other masonry work go to the Historical Architecture Review Board, which meets twice a month, before work starts.
I'd hire the mason who asks about the mortar before the one who asks about the budget. Old brick wants the right mix more than a fast crew.
