Wells and Water Treatment · York County
Private wells are the homeowner's job in Pennsylvania, with no state rule requiring testing or upkeep. The ground here varies: limestone areas yield plenty of water, shale wells are often poor producers, and hard rock holds water only in its fractures. Nitrate is a concern in the farmed limestone areas of the lower Susquehanna basin, and USGS sampled a well near Dillsburg after fluoride reports in the region.
Well drillers need a license from DCNR, which publishes the list, and they file a completion report with a copy for the owner. Before buying treatment equipment, get a certified lab test; Penn State recommends testing for coliform bacteria every year.
A salesman with a test strip in one hand and a contract in the other is not a lab. Get the certified lab test first, then decide what you need.
