Fences · York County
Shallow posts heave. Ground in York County freezes and thaws through the winter, and a post set above the frost line rises a little more each year until the fence leans. Rural lots bring livestock and deer fencing, while borough lots tend to be narrow and close to the neighbor, so the property line matters more than the style.
Get the line confirmed before any posts go in, and ask how deep they will be set. Fences up to about 6 feet are generally exempt from a building permit, but check with your borough or township, since zoning rules still apply. In York city's historic district, fences go through HARB review.
Good fences make good neighbors only when they sit on the right side of the line. Pay for the survey pins.
