Demolition · York County
Demolition here is often partial: a kitchen or bath gutted in an old house, a garage coming down, or a rear addition on a rowhome. Prewar walls and floors can hold lead paint, asbestos in pipe insulation and flooring, and knob-and-tube wiring. On an attached house, the party wall has to stay standing for the neighbor, which changes how the crew works.
Demolishing a house or a large accessory building needs a permit under the state code, and in York city's historic district any demolition goes to the Historical Architecture Review Board first. Ask who tests for asbestos before work starts, since state rules require DEP notice five days before abatement.
Demolition is the only part of a remodel that goes faster than planned. Make sure someone tested for asbestos before it does.
